Alumni are also well-positioned to acquire entry-level teaching and research positions at universities. As a graduate, you may choose to deepen your studies through a design-focused PhD program, like that offered by the CMU School of Design, or continue your education in areas such as business, human-computer interaction, or public policy. Whatever direction you choose to pursue, our MDes will provide you with a strong design education that builds on your background and strengthens the positive trajectory for achieving your professional goals. Campus placement is offered, even internships are offered within the 1st semester. Almost all of the placement and internship tasks are handled by the students itself hence they have a tendency to make sure maximum placement happens in their respective class, which is good.

Minimum requirements listed here are the likely grades required and do not guarantee entry. We assess each application individually and applicants may require a higher grade to be offered a place. Leverage the renowned brand of UC Berkeley, the top public research university in the world, by pursuing the Berkeley MDes. Become part of the student, faculty, and alumni community who have become some of the modern world’s most innovative thought leaders and technical practitioners. Take advantage of the Berkeley ecosystem to launch an innovative career that helps tackle the world’s social, environmental and technological challenges. Because this is a fully remote program, ArtCenter is not authorized to issue I-20s for international students to enter the country to enroll in this program.

Understand Mobile User Experience in Detail

Science and Tech fest of the college was always a big hit of the year as it attracted thousands of participants breaking up their barriers of thinking in the field of science. Clubs are very limited in number so one doesn't get that much social interaction. I did an internship with the Mind tree consulting and it was an amazing experience for me. Now coming to the full-time opportunity there were several offers made from some renowned brands like IBM, Flip kart, TCS, Kanbay, Cognizant, TCS, FICO, Virtusa India, Cordys, etc. M.Des Admission is done on the basis of an entrance examination.

Under these large methodological umbrellas, we use and teach a variety of methods that can help inform, design and test design responses. In particular, we emphasize field deployments, material experiments, participatory design, ethnography, contextual inquiry, participant observation, usability studies and more. We play with paper, cardboard and cardstock, we work with wood, metal, ceramics, and plastics, and we experiment with augmented and virtual reality forms and architectures, as well as connected everyday objects. Competitive applicants have some prior technical preparation and an interest in design as a creative, goal-oriented activity that can contribute to the emergence of innovative new technologies and environments. A unique feature of the MDes program is the design thesis—an independent research and design project that you will conduct under the mentorship of a faculty advisor. The thesis is complemented by a required second-year seminar, elective coursework in the School of Design, and other departments across the Carnegie Mellon campus.

In this section, learn how to validate your mobile UX designs. Usability and desirability are critical components of mobile UX. Usability ensures users can easily navigate and interact with your app or website. It helps the users achieve their goals with minimal frustration.

Each semester you will encounter thoughtfully aligned seminars, studios, and labs that equip you with important knowledge and skills to aid your development as a design leader. Through individual and team-based projects that focus on the design of services or social innovation concepts, you’ll explore design principles, approaches, theories, and tools that are essential for designing for interactions. You may also take advantage of CMU’s stature as a renowned liberal arts research university to pursue research opportunities with faculty and take courses across campus to broaden and deepen your education. Even though designers typically work in service of others and respond to specific prompts, we recognize the importance of your unique interests. Our MDes courses provide you with the autonomy to direct your individual work and offer support as you chart your personal path and discover your design “voice”. Our requirement for MDes students to possess at least one year of professional experience also elevates learning in the form of effective collaboration.

Most MDes courses have a strong focus on the application of artistic and computer-aided design skills to the interpretation of commercial and technical information for the public. Compared to design courses at undergraduate level, this graduate qualification offers the opportunity to focus on more complex design principles and the processes that bring them to life. Every year we used to have two semesters, the ‘spring’ and ‘autumn’ semesters. We read all the foundation courses and also the elective courses. I read the subjects as user experience design, interaction design, mobility design, research into design, etc. In the second year, we did the internship cum industrial training project.

You may optionally include up to two minutes of additional time-based media (audio/video). We suggest highlighting between 3-5 of your most compelling exemplars of creative work. The MDes program consists of four semesters of coursework with no studios. Applicants select one of four domains of study—Ecologies, Narratives, Publics, and Mediums—and undertake a core set of courses, including research methods and related topical courses. Following that domain foundation, each student then forges an individualized trajectory, leveraging course offerings across the GSD, as well as other schools and departments at Harvard. During their fourth semester, MDes students from all four domains come together to focus on collaborative advanced research in the form of open projects, in which their expertise finds application on a current issue.

Humble Design is on a mission to turn houses into homes

After the family found a house they could afford, they had nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. Enjoy cocktails, food, silent auction, and more, plus a live painting created by acclaimed Detroit artist Mike Han, which will then be auctioned off at the event. Homes Furnished: Humble Design Detroit to Serve 2,000th Client in Fight against Homelessness

In 2023, the Furniture Bank helped just over 2,000 families and provided about 18,000 items valued at $1 million. Humble Design Detroit furnished 151 homes in total last year, which impacted 485 people; 306 of those people were children and 15 were veterans. Anyone who lives in Detroit knows how much the city’s homeless population has been suffering, particularly in the last few years. And those lucky enough to get into transitional housing after leaving the overpopulated shelters are starting from scratch — a situation that inspired Treger Strasberg and Ana Smith to start a nonprofit firm called Humble Design.

She found a house she could afford, but there was nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were making nests on the floor where they were going to sleep. I cried my eyes out on my way to picking up my children from day care thinking about those kids sleeping on the floor that night while I was tucking my children into their big beautiful beds.

Meet Rob & Treger Strasberg

Humble Design accepts gently used mattress donations and monetary donations for beds. Through its Beds for Kids program, the Furniture Bank was able to raise $30,000 last year with help from local foundations. Twin beds for children are a highly desired item for which both nonprofits expressed a need. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, corporate sponsorships, furniture donations or making a financial gift, please visit humbledesign.org. With your ticket, you will get three hours of play, food and non-alcoholic beverages (cash bar will also be open).

Where do you like to shop or local designers you support? ModMart for furniture, SHE stores, Intermix and Caruso Caruso for me and John Varvatos for Rob. Do you have advice for those who want to start their own nonprofit?

His paintings are “moments, an expression of time within a journey”.

Both nonprofits expressed that there is a great need for these kinds of services. The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan is a stone’s throw away from Humble Design in Pontiac, said Robert Boyle, the furniture bank’s executive director. After renting the house, she purchased the home on her birthday a few years ago. “It gave the kids comfort and me comfort, and I was able to focus on other things. I guess that’s how we were able to stay so long, because they were able to relax more, and I got a better job,” Ashley stated. It all began in 2009 when Treger Strasberg, the CEO and founder of Humble Design, was new to the Detroit area.

Metro Detroit nonprofit furnishes veteran’s new home ahead of Veterans Day

Every meeting I took with community leaders or knowledgeable individuals ended with me making one more friend. I love the way the communities take responsibility for the other’s well-being. Their efforts are documented in “Motor City Rising,” a three-part series about artists and designers in Detroit on the Ovation network (the last installment will be shown June 15). With your support, Humble Design can help our clients embark on a brighter future. Humble Design furnished its 1,000th home in early 2019, nearly 10 years after the project began. Demand and impact have increased dramatically since then as the charity served its second 1,000 clients in two years thanks to expansion and local sponsorships that have ensured sustainability in more markets.

The average fashion post drove 43 percent more engagement and garnered 51 percent more video views year-over-year. Other football players also used their red carpet looks to pay homage to their upbringings. Arnold, who was traded to the Detroit Lions, was one football player who used his NFL Draft red carpet suit to pay homage to his roots.

Humble Design is a nonprofit that helps families transitioning out of homeless shelters by providing furnishings and design services. The organization turns empty houses into clean, dignified and welcoming homes — a very simple idea that can change a family's future. Founded in 2009, the organization primarily serves single parents with children and veteran families.

We called all these places, and they all responded, “Hey that’s really a great idea, there’s nobody out there who does that! ” By the ninth phone call, Ana and I looked at each other and knew we had found a hole in the system. People are pouring in to celebrate football, the city and have a good time. “What I found was a world of music, culture, art, food and friends. However, I was always very aware and often reminded by friends of the great divide in this city,” Strasberg said.

Upon discovering that her new friend, a mother of two, was homeless, she helped the family find a new place but soon realized that it wasn’t enough. The family was sleeping on the floor, and that was a thought that Strasberg could not bear, so she got to work. Diamond, a single mom with 9-year-old twin girls and an infant boy, has been without a home since the place she was renting in 2019 became uninhabitable due to issues the landlord wouldn't address. With the safety of her children in mind, she was finally able to secure a new house in July, but they have very few comforts and possessions to make it a home.

How to Build a Pergola: Pergola Plans DIY

design pergola

Decorating an outdoor space can take time, effort, money, and research to find the best items that reflect your style while still being functional. We provide helpful resources to help you decide about your wood patio cover, including our guide about How to Pick the Best Wood Pergola and Pergola Styles Comparison. View our Pergola Depot Blog for ideas on a unique, modern outdoor space layout. Few structures manage to be as versatile and attractive in your outdoor space as a pergola. Pergolas offer instant shade for your patio, as well as structural interest in your landscape. Learn how to build a pergola for your backyard in this step-by-step guide.

White Pergola in Napa

After the arbor bench is assembled, plant some climbing flowers or ivy to increase its visual appeal and the shade it provides. Whatever you decide, remember that ultimately the best pergola is the one that makes outdoor living a bigger part of your day. And though the grill master in you may automatically want to put a firepit or outdoor kitchen under your new corner pergola, doing so could pose a serious fire or smoke hazard. Annual cleaning, staining, and sealing can improve its chances of survival by an additional 10 to 12 years. Cosby says, however, that while extra features can enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your pergola, “they can add on to the budget, sometimes significantly,” he says.

Pool Lighting Ideas to Brighten Up Your Outdoor Space

This outdoor living space allows for entertaining year-round — and not just because it's in Southern California. Palm tree-inspired plaster columns (Classic Mouldings) adds a touch of coastal Florida whimsy to the garden space. Adjacent to a forest of greenery, Yardzen uses fresh white hues to make this outdoor lounge space pop. Under the white pergola, find a natural wood dining table, white wicker chairs and white pebbles as flooring.

Pergola Landscape Ideas

Additional elements, such as the fire pit and a variety of colorful patio furniture, help guests feel at home. Although space and budget might be constraints, pergola designs are generally very flexible. You can customize the structure with various materials, finishes, shapes, and other choices. Here, two layers of the pergola's ceiling create a more dynamic top, while columns lend formality that's in tune with the detailing on the rails of the patio space. Space constraints can limit the pergola ideas you can include in an exterior space.

Mix & Match Materials for Your Pergola

Irwin says this can enhance the functionality and enjoyment of the pergola so considering them before purchasing can be helpful. Gather with family and friends outdoors under Veikous' Mediterranean-inspired cedar pergola. Details like the arched, crisscrossed-beam style roof add extra support and visual interest. This pergola is made with a powder-coated aluminum frame and has built-in rain gutters.

Completing its Mediterranean vibe would be its mocha fabric shade and the gorgeous garden lights hung around the pergola. The posts are also solid wood but were painted in a sage green color for a more vintage appeal. The sides of the pergola were semi-covered by a simple diamond-shaped fretwork, in the same sage green color as the posts.

Perk Up Your Backyard with a Pergola – and More Ideas with Decks.com

While most pergolas ideas include a partial opening to the sky, they can also be integrated into the house's roof structure. Here, shingles cover the top of the pergola, offering complete shade beneath the narrow porch structure. In addition, colors used on the pergola's supports pick up on details in the home's windows. A pergola can stand independently or work well with another outdoor structure, such as a patio or deck. Its placement can help delineate various zones, such as a seating area. For example, this pergola idea helps distinguish a lounge area and incorporates a built-in bench shaded by climbing vines overhead.

Even when you're working with limited space, you can still create a visually effective accent with the right small pergola ideas. For instance, accents can move your pergola in countless directions visually. You can use signage, greenery, or any other number of decorations on the numerous support beams or rafters that compose these structures. More than just outdoor eye candy, a pergola can provide shelter from the elements.

Gazebos sometimes also come with side covers/screens or even low walls to provide privacy and protection from insects, while pergolas simply stand on posts and have open sides. In choosing between these two, it is important to know your needs, budget, and available space to determine which is the best for you. A plain black structure makes the perfect frame for an energetic space inside full of color, lighting and accessories. If you’re thinking about moving to pastures new, sprucing up your outside space is a must to add to the value of your home, and ensure a maxed-out sale price.

This 15-foot by 22-foot covered pergola pavilion can provide a spacious outdoor retreat. The plans are designed to be simple with multiple pictures, videos, FAQs, easy-to-follow instructions, and material lists. For a classic wooden pergola, the best woods to use are spruce, Douglas fir or larch. You can also buy ready-to-make pergola kits from DIY stores, where the type of wood isn't always specified. Some suppliers offer softwood as either 'rough sawn' or 'planed and chamfered', depending on the look you have in mind.

This backyard wood pergola sits on a poured concrete patio and offers sweeping views. Cushioned outdoor chairs with a glass table provide a place for conversation and relaxation. This is a rustic wood pergola design that uses a combination of different wood to create this look. Light maple weather-treated wood decking was used as the base/floor material, while solid teak wood was used for its main post/structure.

To check for left-to-right placement parallel to the house, just measure the distance from one of the remote stakes and write this measurement on a notepad. To make sure the layout is square, adjust the diagonal measurements of the postholes so they’re equal. To print out this illustration, go to Additional Information at the end of this story. Pressure-treated dimensional 2x8s and 2x10s make up the majority of the upper framework, and the decorative end pieces are cut with a jigsaw from our pergola plans. The whole project can be built in a couple of weekends, with another weekend for staining and painting.

It depends on your outdoor living situation and what you want out of your potential pergola design, according to Freda. We've found 25 pergola ideas that represent different styles, sizes, materials, and budgets sure to inspire you. For rose lovers, a pergola offers the opportunity to expand your growing space.

Victorian homes in Los Angeles first came onto the scene on Bunker Hill in Downtown, which also happens to be the first district in the city.
